Hyundai Ioniq Breaks Land Speed Record

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq

The Hyundai Ioniq, the first eco vehicle to be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric modes, broke the land speed record for a production-based hybrid last November at 157.825 miles per hour. The record-breaking run, which took place at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, was followed by a display of the Ioniq at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Hyundai outfitted the record-breaking Ioniq Hybrid with different intake and exhaust piping, as well as a nitrous injection system and removed the air conditioner to allow as much power as possible to increase its speed. That mark of 157 mph is actually an average of two runs, the highest of which reached 160.7 mph.

A horsepower figure wasn’t given, but the modifications to the Ioniq probably increased its standard horsepower of 139. The Ioniq Hybrid did keep its standard 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, though, which is mounted to a 6-speed dual clutch transmission plus an electric motor between them.

Inside, everything was removed from the Ioniq hybrid and replaced with a roll cage, racing seat, 6-point harness, and a fire-suppression system for both lighter weight, which let the car go faster, and safety at such high speeds.

The hybrid and all-electric models of the Ioniq are set to launch sometime this winter, with the PHEV version being released in the summer.

2017 Mazda CX-9 Reviews

The 2017 Mazda CX-9

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 has gotten rave reviews so far from drivers, whose love for the large crossover extends to its styling, performance, and refined interior, to name just a few.

The CX-9 is the largest crossover in its segment, but, according to a Forbes review, Mazda’s signature Kodo design language makes the expansive vehicle look neat and respectable. Taking design elements from the small CX-3 and mid-size CX-5, the CX-9’s fluid styling and incredible proportions make it one of the most attractive SUVs in the segment.

The interior is finely crafted from the best materials, with soft-touch plastics, comfortable seats, and a color touchscreen, which adds to the CX-9’s sophistication. Add this to the top-of-the-line infotainment technology found at each of the four trim levels, along with a host of i-Activsense safety features including Smart Brake Support and Radar Cruise Control and you have one of the most feature-complete SUVs in the segment.

The CX-9 challenges the V6-equipped SUVs by incorporating a turbocharged four-cylinder, which provides plenty of power at a lower fuel cost. Available AWD improves performance on wet roads, and even without it the steering, gear shifting, and chassis dynamics are all perfectly tuned and smooth.

The CX-9 is one of the most stylish and driving-focused SUVs on the market, so if you’re looking for a vehicle with precise handling that still has tons of room for passengers and cargo, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 is perfect for you.
