Check Your Tires: Tips & Tricks

Make sure to check your tires to ensure your safety on the road

Tires are such an integral part of any vehicle, yet they often get overlooked by owners when it comes to regular maintenance. Don’t make that oh-so-easily-avoidable mistake! Having roadworthy tires will make your daily drive, or your travels to grandma’s for Thanksgiving, safer and easier for everyone.

Two foolproof ways you can check your tires is through examining their pressure and wear levels.

Tire Pressure

To check your tires’ pressure level is simple. First, purchase a trustworthy tire gauge, available at home improvement, automotive, or general department stores. Make sure you haven’t driven for at least three hours before checking your tire pressure. Insert the gauge into the tire’s valve system and compare the psi reading to what is listed in your owner’s manual. If you’re too high, release air until the proper number is reached. If too low, take your vehicle to the nearest air pump to add air to every tire.

Tire Wear

There’s a very simple way to check your tires for over-wear. Just take a penny and insert it with Honest Abe upside-down into the tread of one of your tires. If most of Lincoln’s hair is hidden, your tires are still roadworthy. But, if you can see his forehead, it’s probably time for a new set of tires. How to Prepare Your Car for Spring

prepare your car for springYes, it is still February, but warmer weather is not too far away. Now is the time to make plans on how to prepare your car for spring.

  • Give it a wash. Give your car a thorough wash to clean away all the dirt, salt, and grime that gathers over the winter. Don’t forget the undercarriage, as lingering salt residue can cause damage.
  • Clean the inside. Pay close attention to the interior as well. Take out your floor mats and give them a good scrub. You can even spray them down with the hose and let them dry in the sun.
  • Check your tires. Look over your tires and check for signs for wear. You should also have them rotated and aligned, if necessary.
  • Inspect your wipers. After working to clear your windshield of frost all season long, it might be time for a new set. If they are streaking or stuttering, go ahead and get a new pair.
  • Top off your fluids. Check your fluid levels, especially the windshield washer fluid, and refill them, as necessary.
