Which event are you most looking forward to this month?

Memphis is hustling and bustling as Christmas lingers right around the corner with New Year’s Eve to follow. But, it’s not too late to plan a few final seasonal outings with friends and family. Just make sure your gifts are wrapped and your Christmas decorations are up, and then head out to enjoy some Memphis holiday events this 2016.

For one thing, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy a lovely light display. Get a group together or take your visiting relatives to one of the area’s best. The Starry Nights at Shelby Farms Park display is the largest in the Mid-South with over 1.5 million lights and runs until December 27th. Or, you can visit the Zoo Lights where you’ll also get to meet Santa, go ice skating, and meet live reindeer.

Speaking of Santa, there are several more chances to meet him these last few days leading up to Christmas. He’ll be at Enchanted Forest at Pink Palace, Carriage Crossing and Wolfchase Mall through Christmas Eve—then he’ll be off to make some important deliveries.

In the days following Christmas, make plans to go ice skating with friends and family. And don’t forget to schedule something fun for New Year’s Eve, like the American Queen New Year’s Celebration Steamboat Cruise, the Overton Square New Year’s Eve Party or just a simple, fun night of bowling. Memphis November Events: What’s Going on this Month?

According to I Love Memphis, one of the most popular events for people to attend is the upcoming Indie Memphis Film Festival from November 1st-7th. Featuring films from local and regional artists, this event is currently in its 19th year. The Indie Memphis organization is a two-time recipient of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences grant, and it was named one of the top “25 Coolest Film Festivals.” If you’re looking for a way to support local arts while also seeing the latest films, stop by this event.

From November 18th-20th you can also see the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention. Perfect for those who love fantasy, cosplay, comic books, and more, this event caters to a wide demographic. There will be gaming, late night entertainment, a concert, gothic ball, and more. You can also meet Chance Raspberry, lead animator for the Simpsons.

  • Beale Street – There are few places that provide a greater look at history and culture than Beale Street. Boasting attractions like the headquarters of Civil War General Ulysses Grant to the birthplace of rock ‘n roll, Beale Street has made a name for itself around the country. There are over two dozen clubs and shops as well, so those with little interest in the city’s history can grab a souvenir instead!
  • Mud Island River ParkMud Island River Park stretches five blocks and is designed to give guests a look at life on the Mississippi. Enjoy the scenic view of the Mississippi River and downtown Memphis and take a ride on the Swiss-built monorail system. Most visitors spend at least four hours at the park so plan accordingly!
  • Memphis Zoo – The Memphis Zoo is home to thousands of animals and puts on special events and exhibits throughout the year. That alone makes it a great place to spend a day! Throw in animal shows and rides as well for a vacation the kids will never forget.



See REO Speedwagon at Live at the Gardens

concertSome musicians have it and lose it, while others start rock-n-rolling but never stop. Count REO Speedwagon among the latter. They hit the scene 40 years ago and started churning out hit after hit, including “Keep on Lovin’ You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” After all was said and done, they would have thirteen Top 40 hits. They have sold over 40 million records to date.

Luckily for us, they haven’t thrown in the towel yet. In fact, you can catch REO Speedwagon at Live at the Garden on August 25th. Show starts at 8:00pm.

The Live at the Garden concert series has been inviting top-notch musical acts to Memphis since 2001. Everyone from Al Green to Diana Ross to Duran Duran to Sheryl Crow has graced the stage. Nowhere else can you find such great music in such a beautiful venue as the Memphis Botanical Gardens.
